Before you buy
- Read the current age warning. Look beyond the front-of-box age and review small parts, movement, reading level, and adult-setup requirements.
- List every sensor. Microphone, camera, location, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, facial recognition, and remote monitoring each create different questions.
- Read the privacy policy. Find collection, sharing, retention, deletion, parental consent, and support-contact details.
- Calculate total cost. Include subscriptions, accessories, batteries, replacement parts, and cloud features.
- Plan where it will be used. Connected voice or camera toys belong in shared spaces, not private sleeping or changing areas.
During setup
- Create a unique password and enable multi-factor authentication when available.
- Use the minimum permissions required for the features your family actually wants.
- Disable remote access, camera, microphone, contacts, or location when not needed.
- Teach children that toys can make mistakes and should not be trusted with secrets.
- Set short sessions and connect digital play to conversation, drawing, building, or movement.
After updates
Recheck app permissions and privacy settings after major software updates. A toy’s capabilities can change after purchase.
